About Us

We are a small, family-owned company, specialising in undyed yarn for dyeing. At the head is Andy Robinson, who is accompanied by fellow directors Jeni Hewlett (his wife) and Doug Robinson (his son).

Andy has over 40 years of experience in the wool industry. Chester Wool Company has been in its current form since 2012, but preceding this Andy had been working as a wool merchant and selling undyed yarn for six years. Going back even further, Andy’s dad and his company had been working with our partner mill in Peru for 80 years. Quite a history!

Jeni has been a hand-dyer for over 20 years, and has been working closely with Andy for much of that time. Jeni used to buy cones of undyed yarn from Andy on eBay and they hit it off after Jeni cheekily requested next day delivery on a 3pm order (sound familiar folks?)! Andy and Jeni met up in St Fagan’s Museum in Cardiff to talk yarn, and the conversation never ended. It was clearly meant to be.

Fast forward to 2012 and Chester Wool Company was born. In 2016 we purchased our American company with whom we had a long-standing relationship, and in 2017, Doug came to help us unload a container and he never left! He brings a strong background in retail to the team.

We are incredibly fortunate to be able to work together as a family, especially as we each have different skills that we bring to the table. In 2020, due to Brexit, we set up our warehouse in the Netherlands. It was a bit wild – interviewing staff over Zoom and renting a warehouse without even seeing it first. However, it was just what we had to do, and absolutely the right decision.

We are very lucky to be supported by our amazing staff, who we could not do without. We laugh a lot, occasionally cry and generally hope that we provide you with beautiful yarn bases, friendly service and some ‘lols’ whenever we can.

Yours,
All at CWC
